I made this for a party and it tasted great and I would definitely make it again but with changes. I didn't give this 5 stars because there was way too much pasta called for in this recipe so next time I will probably cut the amount of pasta in half. Also, I would use a different pasta shape, like bowties or small shells. People kept asking if I was supposed to heat it up, they didn't realize it was a cold spaghetti salad. But everyone who ate it thought it tasted great - in fact, my grandmother, who is a harsh critic of how people cook, even asked me for the recipe, but she also said "too much pasta" and "use bowties next time."-06 Jul 2005
I wasn't sure about the thyme so I left it out. Before eating the dish, I did a taste test and put some on my plate in 3 separate sections. I put a dash of thyme on one, some dill on the 2nd, and some Old Bay Seasoning on the 3rd & mixed each one a little bit. My preference was for the dill. It tasted OK without the dill too.-22 Jun 2003
this pasta salad was super tasty and really quite easy to make. i made it using dill instead of thyme and less pasta like other reviewers suggested. the only thing i would do differently next time is i will break the pasta in half before cooking - it was really hard to get everything to combine with super long strands. still, i will defintely make again.-09 Jul 2007

3. Whisk well and add to the pasta bowl.
4. Mix well.
5. Garnish with fried onions and serve at once.
Creamy Pesto Dressing
Hint: Make your pesto dressing in a separate bowl so you can make sure you incorporate and mix your dressing perfectly before adding to your pasta salad bowl.
- Mayo – I only use Hellmann’s
- Pesto – Its OK to purchase pesto in a jar, its typically by the Italian products in your store, but if you want to make your own homemade pesto sauce, I have a recipe
- Whole Cream – if needed, you can substitute half and half or milk, but it might be less thick. Just lower the amount you use to find the right consistency. It wont alter the flavor too much, although I always recommend using whole cream when you can for that rich hearty flavor
- Olive Oil
- White Vinegar
Ingredients for Creamy Shrimp Pasta Salad
This Creamy Shrimp Pasta Salad has easy to find ingredients, and you can also use any veggies you have in hand. To make it vegan, leave the shrimp out, add a small can of chickpeas, and replace yogurt and mayo with vegan yogurt and vegan mayo.
Pasta – I used gnocchi pasta shells, you can use any short pasta like macaroni, medium shells, ditalini, or farfalle. The pasta should be cooked and cooled for this cold salad.
Shrimp – I used peeled fresh shrimp and cooked them with a little butter, garlic, and paprika. However, you can use cooked prawns. If you don’t like shrimp, replace it with some grilled chicken or with a can of chickpeas for a vegan option.
Veggies – This salad includes some cucumber, cherry tomatoes, green bell pepper, and red onions. I used the vegetables I had in hand. Alternatively, you can use carrots, sweet peppers, broccoli, summer squash, steamed green beans, regular tomatoes, or shredded cabbage.

Check Shrimp for Freshness
- Fresh shrimp should smell clean, refrain from shrimp that smells of ammonia.
- At the fish market, fresh shrimp should be stored in or on ice.
- If you purchase frozen shrimp, avoid shrimp that was peeled and deveined prior to freezing. The practice of cleaning the shrimp before freezing may cause a loss of flavor and texture.
- Be aware of leakage or frozen surface ice on frozen shrimp. These are signs that the shrimp has been defrosted and refrozen and should be avoided.
HOW TO MAKE prawn cocktail salad:
Wash and slice the cos lettuce then arrange on a platter. Thinly slice the avocado and lay on top of the lettuce. Mix all the ingredients together for the Marie Rose sauce and chill in the fridge until ready to use.
Fry the prawns for 1 minute on each side in sizzling garlic butter. Arrange on top of the lettuce and avocado. Drizzle the Marie Rose sauce on top of the salad and serve with lime wedges.
This salad isn’t only for a crowd. To make a special dinner for two, just halve all of the ingredients. This is what my husband Mike and I had for our Christmas dinner last year.
