Rachael Ray didn't really seem to enjoy her fancy feast.

Rachael, does that even have EVOO in it? Rachael Ray has been the spokesperson for many food brands, but now she has her very own brand of all-natural pet food, called Nutrish. And to prove that her palate is just as refined as her furry friends, Ray gave everyone quite a wake-up call this morning when she sampled her line of cat food on live television, on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Although she was hesitant at first, show regular Thomas Roberts coerced her into trying it. Ray decided to go for the mackerel because she said that was the tastiest. Not to be a spoilsport, Roberts ended up eating a spoonful as well. Later he admitted that even though the cat food was “not bad,” he said afterward, “I’m still trying to get the taste out of my mouth.”

Later today, Ray will be continuing to show her love of cats by helping to give shelter cats a makeover, with professional groomers and a photographer, which will hopefully help the felines finds new homes.

Winning three Daytime Emmy Awards, Ray Rachael started building her reputation as a successful cook encouraging cooking and teaching families to cook, feeding hungry kids, and funding cooking education.

In July 2008, Rachael Ray’s “Nutrish” pet food was therefore introduced. The dog foods are created from recipes Ray developed for her pitbull called “Isaboo”. All the profits from the sales of these products go to Rachael’s Rescue, a charity organization which provides assistance for animals at risk.

Cynthia: Oh she eats, Marcy. She may be on TV but she isn’t one of those ridiculous celebrity nutrition hacks who touts crazy fad diets and cleanses.

What I Can Tell You About The Taping I Attended of “Iron Chef America” Without Having To Pay The Food Network $1,000,000

The Food Network really doesn’t want me to tell you what I witnessed on Monday, January 23rd. Upon arriving at The Food Network studios in The Chelsea Market, they had my companions and I sign a piece of paper that made us swear we wouldn’t reveal any secrets from the episode we were about to see taped of Iron Chef America. Especially: which Iron Chef would do battle the identity of the challenger and, most importantly, the secret ingredient. The penalty would be–according to the document–$1 million. Plus they’d send Mario Batali to walk on you in his orange clogs.

What follows, then, is a carefully guarded account of our experience there. Please don’t ask me any questions like “What was the secret ingredient?” because answering that [fennel!] might cost me my future livelihood. [Just kidding, it wasn’t fennel. Stop asking.]

News of the Iron Chef tickets reached my e-mail box a few weeks earlier. My wonderful agent, who plucked me from nowhere and placed me on the road to somewhere, informed me that she had two tickets: one for me and one for my editor at Bantam/Dell. The taping would be Monday at 2:30, we’d meet out front at 2:25. She also attached a letter from The Food Network that ended thusly:



As you can see, they are VERY serious about this confidentiality agreement. I don’t know why you keep bugging me to reveal things like who the Iron Chef was [Sakai!], they’re seriously going to sue me. [Just kidding, Sakai isn’t on Iron Chef America. You got so rocked.]

Tickets for “Iron Chef America” are invite only, which is why attending the taping is so special. We gathered in a room on the ground level of the Food Network studios in the very back of the market. Sandwiches and cookies from Amy’s Bread were available and of course I couldn’t refuse a cookie. On a TV screen they showed previous battles as Food Network employees collected the signed forms and began to herd people into an elevator.

Before we got on, we were asked to turn our cellphones and pagers off. “You’ll have a chance to turn them back on after the battle’s over, before the judging.”

The elevator took us up six flights and they led us into another waiting room. From here, you could kind of see into the Iron Chef studio. The feeling was similar to that of waiting for a Disney ride: fog from fog machines rolled in through cracks in the curtain, and you could see bright spotlights up ahead.

While we waited, we could watch what was going on in the studio on a TV monitor placed before us. We watched the challenger (who, I didn’t recognize and never learned the identity of anyway!) choose his Iron Chef for combat. We then watched him do it again. And again. These things, you see, require multiple takes.

Just then, some fanfare as a curtain parted to our left and the secret ingredient was wheeled in on a prop-like tray that looked like something from a poor man’s production of “Pirates of Penzance.”

“It looks like there’s a body in there,” said my agent.

“Maybe there is and that’s the secret ingredient!” I suggested. A woman to my right sneered.

Eventually they led us into the studio. The space was surprisingly small and fake-looking. Kitchen Stadium in Japan looks like a real stadium or at least a space that has some significance, even if the whole mythology is made up. Here: the room was a giant black box with a wheeled-on set. This is the same room, we later learned, where Emeril tapes “Emeril Live!” and (gag!) Rachel Ray shoots her show.

There are two sets of seats for audience members. The VIP seats, where we weren’t sitting, and the not VIP seats where we were sitting. These faced the Iron Chef directly the Challenger’s side faced no audience.

To my right they pushed on Alton Brown’s set piece: the panel with computers where he does his color commentary during the show. And then out came Alton Brown, looking just like he does on TV only a tiny bit sweatier. What follows is a glowing paragraph in praise of Alton Brown.

Alton Brown is a genius. Or, to rephrase: he’s a genius at what he does. He’s a brilliant television personality. Whenever they shot a segment with him, he told them to turn off the teleprompters: he didn’t need them. And then he’d say something funny to make the director laugh or the crew laugh and each time he was a consummate professional–never fudging a word, always crisp and clear and smart. And then there’s the fact that for the entire one hour battle that ensues he speaks the ENTIRE time. It’s truly remarkable. The Iron Chefs are talented men and women, but for my money the show wouldn’t be watchable without Alton’s quick wit and intelligent observations of what’s going on. He’s the glue that holds Iron Chef America together.

[However, his earring is awful. Yes he has an earring. So does that useless sidekick Kevin. They both have the same earring. Are they in a cult? Or did they go through a joint midlife crisis?]

Alton aside, the experience of watching Iron Chef live is a bit like the experience of a child who believes with all his heart in tooth fairies catching his mother put money under the pillow. The whole thing’s a sham!

No, it really is. I’m sorry. When we sat down, both chefs had pots already boiling: sure it’s probably chicken stock or other kitchen essentials, but there was something very predetermined about what was going on. When they revealed the secret ingredient–ooh! ahh!–the chefs looked like they were being read the serial number from the side of a library book. There wasn’t a nerve in the air. And every action we observed felt the opposite of spontaneous. These people KNOW or at least have a very good idea of what the secret ingredient is going to be. And with all the stops and starts and editing and lack of music, a live performance of Iron Chef America is as tense as watching two 90 year olds play a game of hopscotch.

However, with that said, there is something wonderful about observing a brilliant chef in action. And in this case the Iron Chef was a pleasure to watch. The assistants too. Watching them buzz around the kitchen, grilling, sauteing, setting things on fire: it’s quite entertaining. That hour goes by very fast.

At the end, they have the five plates they’re required to finish by the time the buzzer sounds. Then they have an opportunity to plate the plates for the judging. Here’s where I was confused: the Iron Chef went first. Didn’t the Challenger’s food get cold? It takes 45 minutes to get through the judging. Doesn’t that put the Challenger at a huge disadvantage? Especially with foods that need to be served right away?

I don’t have an answer. I actually couldn’t stay for the Challenger’s judging, I was late for class. [My agent informed me who won over e-mail.]

The best part, though, came during the Iron Chef’s judging. Without revealing anything, the judges were ambivalent about a few dishes and then they raved over one particular dish. As they raved, one of the Iron Chef’s assistants came out to the audience with a plate of this particular dish. When it passed my way, I lifted a sample of this expertly prepared secret ingredient and placed it in my mouth. It was truly divine: a taste memory I’ll never forget. I can’t tell you more ’til the episode airs.

And that’s essentially what the Iron Chef taping experience is like. Oh, but there are smells too. I forgot to mention that: the smells that waft over you as you watch are really wonderful. If Smellovision is ever invented, Iron Chef America will be the show to watch. In the meantime, I can’t tell you anymore. I’m sorry. Unless you send me $1 million and a picture of you in a Speedo. Then I might consider. Otherwise, in the words of my uncle: Allez cuisine!

The first ingredient is chicken which is a great source of protein. However the second ingredient is chicken meal which is a dry rendered product from a combination of chicken flesh and skin with and without accompanying bone. Basically its it’s ground down, melted and cooked for hours to finally create a powder. It is then cooked again to add to your cats food.

The third ingredient is corn gluten meal. Cats do not digest corn well and get very little nutritional value from it.

Even though corn gluten meal does have protein, it’s not the kind of protein that cats benefit from. Cats have to eat twice as much corn to get the same amount of protein that they would from meat or egg proteins.

The next group of ingredients are dried ground peas, lentils, and pea protein.

While peas and lentils do contain a good amount of protein and are a good source of carbohydrates and fiber, they are still “fillers” and a way to increase protein in a less expensive way. This also applies to dried beet pulp and powdered cellulose which are actually wood pulp used as fillers and linked to digestion issues in cats.

Dried cranberry, dried blueberry, and dried pumpkin are known as a super foods, packed with vitamins and antioxidants, and are becoming more common ingredients in cat food. Antioxidants are also used as a way of preserving pet food. Blueberries are also used as a colorant. Pumpkin has been known to help cats with both constipation and diarrhea.

A “stoup” (stew + soup) is thinner than a stew, but thicker than a soup. Television food cook Rachael Ray has popularized the word “stoup,” and a trademark was filed in 2007.

The word “stoup” has appeared earlier in several food articles and recipes, dating back at least to 1964. Another, less popular “Rachael Ray-ism” is “choup" (chowder + soup).

What is Chicken Stoup? You may well ask, for the word “stoup” is brand new and expresses a brand new idea in chicken cookery. As its name implies, the dish is a cross between a stew and a soup, combining the most wonderful features of both.

Into the kettle go meaty pieces of chicken, and with them a companionable array of ingredients—celery, onion, green pepper, potatoes, canned tomatoes, canned corn, and just enough seasoning to add zip without overwhelming the delicate taste of the bird.

The stoup cooks for about three quarters of an hour, and provides plenty of excellent broth. Serve in soup plates, and eat with a soup spoon, fork and knife. It’s delicious and hearty, and golden corn sticks are just the perfect accompaniment.

One broiler-fryer chicken, cut in serving pieces
One-fourth cup (one-half stick) butter or margarine
Two cups sliced celery
one large onion, chopped
One green pepper, cut in strips and halved
Two cups water
Three medium potatoes, quartered
Two teaspoons salt
One-half teaspoon paprika
One-quarter teaspoon black pepper
One-quarter teaspoon thyme
One tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
One can (one pound) tomatoes
One can (one pound) whole kernel corn

Melt butter in 5 or 6-quart kettle over medium heat add chicken and brown on both sides. Remove chicken add celery, onion and green pepper to kettle and cook 5 minutes, stirring often. Add water, potatoes, salt, paprika, black pepper, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, and chicken simmer 30 minutes. Add tomatoes and corn simmer 10 to 15 minutes, until chicken is tender. Serve with corn sticks. (Serve in soup plates and eat with knife, fork, and spoon.) Makes 4 to 6 servings.

Rachael Ray teaches simple recipes that she says can be completed in 30 minutes or less, although critics claim that her concept does not include preparation. [ 6 ] Ray says that her Sicilian maternal grandfather, Emmanuel Scuderi, and her Cajun ancestry serve as a strong influence on her cooking. She uses ingredients such as fresh herbs, garlic and chicken stock to boost flavors. She believes that measuring "takes away from the creative, hands-on process of cooking" and instead favors approximations such as "half a palmful". To critics of her shortcut techniques, Ray responds, "I have no formal anything. I'm completely unqualified for any job I've ever had." [ 5 ] She acknowledges that she cannot bake because it requires measured ingredients, that she cannot make coffee, and that she burns bread under the broiler.

The set of 30 Minute Meals uses a yellow Model 61C Chambers stove from the 1950s, notable for its top-opening broiler, super-insulated oven, and unique Thermowell. On November 12, 2006, Ray and Mario Batali defeated the team of Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis on an episode of Iron Chef America during which cranberries were the secret ingredient. On March 18, 2007, Food Network debuted a Rachael Ray episode of its special Chefography series, on which she stated that "the worst day of [her] life" was Iron Chef America, admitting to being anxious about it for weeks before. She also told commentator Alton Brown that she was "a cook, not a chef."


In 2005, Ray signed a deal with Oprah Winfrey and King World Productions to host a syndicated daytime TV talk show. [ 11 ] The show, Rachael Ray, premiered on September 18, 2006. Recurrent appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show were used to fuel the launch, much as Dr. Phil's show was spun off based on his own frequent visits to Oprah. [ 12 ] The show tapes in New York City. In coordination with the syndication announcement, Ray said, "People know me for my love of food, but I have so much more I want to share."

Ray has appeared on The View, The Today Show , The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Late Show with David Letterman, Nightline, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Larry King Live, Cake Boss, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and The Dr. Oz Show. For Sesame Street’s 38th season, Ray appeared in an episode to present "pumpernickel" as the word of the day . On January 12, 2008, Ray's television series Rachael's Vacation premiered on the Food Network. [ 13 ] The show is a five-part food travelogue shot in various European countries. [ 14 ]

In 2008, Ray became a television executive producer [ 15 ] of a short-lived Latin cooking show on the Food Network called Viva Daisy!, starring Daisy Martínez. In August 2009, Ray appeared as herself on Million Dollar Password for charity for Yum-O! and her own charity for animal rescue with Regis Philbin. Ray also appeared on the hidden-camera show I Get That a Lot, pretending to be an employee at a dry cleaners. In September 2010, a new show, her first new cooking show in eight years, Rachael Ray's Week In a Day began airing on the Cooking Channel. In January 2012, Rachael was one of the two team captains (along with Guy Fieri) in the Food Network reality series Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off . [ 16 ]


In 2003, she posed for the men's magazine FHM. A writer for The New York Times wrote, "The shots feature Ray in short-shorts with an exposed midriff, licking chocolate off a big wooden spoon, eating a strawberry and sitting in a sink, laughing as suds cascade down her thighs." [ 5 ] In a March 2009 interview with Nightline co-anchor Cynthia McFadden, Ray defended her decision to pose in the magazine. [ 17 ] The Reader's Digest Association launched Ray's eponymous magazine, Every Day with Rachael Ray on October 25, 2005. The magazine featured seven issues in 2006, and increased to ten issues in 2007. On October 12, 2011, it was announced that Meredith Corporation had reached an agreement to acquire Every Day with Rachael Ray. [ 18 ]

Product endorsements

In November 2006, Ray became a spokeswoman for Nabisco crackers. She appears in commercials and on boxes for the many Nabisco products. Many boxes with Ray's picture have her recipes. In February 2007, WestPoint Home launched sheets, blankets, and coverlets designed by Ray. [ 19 ] Within six months, WestPoint expanded Ray's bed and bath line to include the "Moppine", a two-in-one dish towel/oven mitt, as Ray is often seen with a kitchen towel over her shoulder that doubles for her as an ersatz mitt. [ 20 ]

In March 2007, the Dunkin' Donuts company announced Ray as its celebrity endorser, mainly of its coffee, since she had denied being able to make coffee herself. [ 21 ] As part of a promotional campaign, Ray describes the company's coffee as "fantabulous." [ 22 ]

In May 2007, Ray's recipes were made available on AT&T cellular phones via the "Rachael Ray Recipes on the Run" feature. [ 23 ] In July 2008, Rachael Ray Nutrish pet food was introduced. The dog foods are created from recipes that Ray developed for her pit bull, Isaboo. All proceeds from the sale of these products go to Rachael's Rescue, a charity founded by Ray to help at-risk animals. [ 24 ]

You Need to Make These Black Cat Cake Pops Right Meow

Halloween is just around the corner and to kick things off we’re sharing a week’s worth of festive Facebook Live videos. There will be plenty of spooky food and crafts involved — but first up are these adorable black cat cake pops.

You’ll start with the two main ingredients for cake pops: cake and frosting. Store-bought versions of both are totally acceptable and in any flavor you prefer. The trick to getting them to look like felines are almonds. After chilling the balls for 20 minutes in the freezer, stick two raw almonds in the top of each ball. Once the pops are covered in melted chocolate you’re left with a perfect cat-like shape.

Decorating the face of each kitty is also up to you. Use any shape sprinkle to make the nose, then pipe the eyes and whiskers with vanilla frosting. If a steady hand is not one of your many gifts, try using pretzel sticks for the whiskers and candy corn or round sprinkles for the eyes.

Chocolate Almond Black Cat Cake Pops
Makes: 21 cake pops

1 box chocolate cake mix
4-5 tbsp. chocolate frosting
2 (10 oz.) bags dark chocolate, melted
21 lollipop sticks
42 raw almonds
Star sprinkles (optional)
1 cup vanilla frosting

1. Bake cake according to package directions cool completely.
2. Crumble cake into a large bowl until fine. Add frosting 1 tablespoon at a time till mixture is moist enough to hold a shape.
3. Shape mixture into 21 1½ -in. balls, and place on a parchment-paper-lined baking sheet.
4. Melt the chocolate in the microwave or in a double boiler over hot water, stirring occasionally until melted. Remove from heat. Dip the tip of the sticks into the melted chocolate and insert into the balls about one-fourth way. Freeze for 20 minutes.
5. When the balls are firm but not frozen remove from the freezer. Stick 2 almonds in the top of each ball half way to form ears. Dip each ball into the melted chocolate, shaking off any excess. Place a star sprinkle in the middle of each pop to form the nose, if desired. Allow pops to set in a styrofoam block for 10 minutes.
6. Fill a plastic ziplock bag with 1 snipped corner or a piping bag fitted with a No. 2 tip with frosting. Carefully pipe eyes and whiskers. Chill 1 hour before serving.
